Train pictures are always interesting for the power and size they project.  We have been able to photograph both the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad in Chama, New Mexico and the Durango to Silverton railroad in Durango, Colorado.

Both of these trains are narrow guage steam locomotives left over from the mining days. They are carefully restored and a popular tourist attraction. Both take riders through beautiful rocky mountain canyons.  The Durango and Silverton train travels about fifty miles through country that is NOT accessable by road.  They have a couple of places where they will stop and drop off or pick up hikers/backpackers.

New Mexico is also has a couple of active modern railroad lines crossing it.  One of these goes through the old turquoise mining town of Cerrillos, NM.  With the right timing and some luck it may be possible to obtain train pictures with desert skies, special lighting, and a backdrop of old mining equipment.

We had an especially fortunate opportunity when we came to the railroad overpass in Cerrillos at sunset at a time of the year when the setting sun was directly in line with the tracks.  That left the foreground dark with just the reflection of the sun on the rails.

This website displays only a few of our collection of train pictures.
